2021 Topper’s Mountain Nebbiolo Extra Brut Rose

A note from the maker :

“Topper’s Mountain unique terroir arises from its high elevation location on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range and deep, volcanic soils.

Mark Kirkby established the vineyard between 1998 and 2002, with his family. The vineyard was planted with rare varieties, chosen to make the most of the unique terroir.

This is our little miracle. 2021 harvest was very wet and cold. To such an extent that it looked like our Nebbiolo would succumb to the rot before it eventually ripens. In the middle of March, a dooms day forecast of 200mm of rain in one day popped up and we knew we couldn’t wait anymore. We harvested just before the big downpour and saved the crop which was nowhere near to decent red wine ripeness. And that was the moment when we looked at each other and asked: Has anyone before tried to make Traditional Method Sparkling Nebbiolo?

Tasting Notes :

"Well, it is not the first sparkling Nebbiolo ever – there’ve been some attempts in Piedmont – but it is a rare expression of the variety indeed. What is most important: it’s delicious! The Nebbiolo character is shining through with juicy rose hips, raspberries, and wild strawberries. Creamy texture is enhanced by 18 months aging on the lees. This is serious sparkling wine yet so charming and easy to drink. A little miracle achieved in creative desperation.

Optimal serving temperature: 8 – 10 °C

Food pairing: Ultimate summer drink that will go great with light savory meals like charcuterie and beef or salmon tartare.”
